On May 29th each year, the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) organizes World Digestive Health Day, which aims to raise awareness about digestive health issues and highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy digestive system.
In honor of World Digestive Health Day, this segment discusses the Fairy Gutmother’s favorite food-as-medicine approach to probiotics, which helps populate the gut with beneficial bacteria, a key component of optimal gut health.
Kombucha: A fermented tea that’s great for sipping and populating the gut with good bacteria. You can also try blending it into a smoothie, which is a refreshing treat for these warmer months ahead.
Yogurt: Fermented or cultured dairy is full of beneficial living organisms. Think of it like a food-as-medicine approach to a probiotic supplement. It’s a great snack, breakfast, or overnight oats recipe ingredient.
Ferments: Foods like sauerkraut and kimchi (a Korean version of kraut) are fermented, which means they contain beneficial living organisms like a probiotic that helps populate the GI tract with beneficial bacteria. If you’re new to using ferments, incorporate them slowly, even a tablespoon with each meal. Or, you can incorporate them into recipes like this Spicy Kraut Slaw demoed during this segment. Full recipe details are below.
