Today is National Backwards Day. Psychologist Dr. Tracy Packiam Alloway joined us with ways to use Backwards day for your Mental Health.
Say NO If you are the type of person who struggles with people pleasing, saying NO may be the “Backwards” response for you.
1. Set your limits. Decide ahead of time what you are willing to do
2. Have a Script. Write down ahead of time what you would like to say. This can help you in the moment when you are feeling emotional or pressured.
3. Repeat. Instead of over explaining or over apologizing, you can Repeat your script.
Say YES If you are the type of person who prefers to stay in their comfort zone, saying YES may be the “Backwards” response for you.
1. Saying “YES and….” can improve connection with someone. Leading researchers have found this opens up a conversation and allows great trust to be built.
2. Adjust expectations. When you say YES to a new activity or experience, it can be helpful to begin with a curious mind.
3. Remember you Why YES. Remind yourself of the Intention or Reason you decided to say yes - was it to learn something new, to meet new people, to challenge yourself?
