TUCSON, Ariz. – Acclaimed photographer Dan Budnik, noted for his portraits of artists in New York in the 1960s and documenting the civil rights movement and Native American culture, has died. In 1958, Budnik photographed the Youth March for Integrated Schools and the March on Washington in 1963 as well as every stage of the Selma to Montgomery March in Alabama in 1965. By the late 1960s, Budnik began to devote much of his time to Native American causes. He photographed the elders of 20 Native American nations across the country. Budnik also is survived by son Aaron Budnik, who is a rare-books dealer in London, and grandson Riley Budnik.

Hundreds of foothills homes on the outskirts of Tucson remained under an evacuation notice Friday as firefighters worked to keep a wildfire from moving downhill from canyons and ridges in mountains in a national forest. The Federal Emergency Management Agency granted Arizonas request for money to help fight the fire, officials said Thursday. Flames have been visible from Tucson at night, and smoke from the fire plumed over a suburb Friday morning. Sheriff's officials went door to door in neighborhoods on Thursday to notify residences of the evacuation notice, which a sheriff's spokesman said Friday wasn't mandatory. The dry, hot weather and the steep, rocky topography have been the main challenges in fighting the fire near Tucson, Jarrold said.
