From sky-high property taxes to soaring insurance premiums, affordability is becoming a dealbreaker for people wanting to move to the Sunshine State, and it’s resulting in bold proposals from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

By now Duval County Homeowner should have received their property tax notices in the mail. And by now you my have noticed the proposed rate is much higher than your last bill.

Jacksonville is mailing out TRIM (truth in millage) notices Friday. It’s the first look at what your property tax bill will be this year -- and unfortunately, that bill will be higher than last year.

Voters in Clay County approved the continuation of the additional 1 mill ad valorem tax for schools district and charter school security expenses. The ballot read, “to fund safety and security for public students and staff, and provide operating expenses of the district, beginning July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2027.

Nassau County voters approved a 1 mill increase in property taxes to raise money to attract and retain high-quality teachers and staff, and enhance art, athletics, safety and security for students. The county expects it would raise $13.7 million each year.

Clay county voters will have the opportunity to vote on whether a property tax hike should remain in effect for another 4 years. This is the property tax increase passed by voters in 2018 to secure schools. Much of that money went to starting up a school district police force.

The Duval County Property Appraiser said Friday that homeowners and property owners will not pay a new tax until 2023.

It's still not clear when Duval County homeowners will get a higher tax bill to fund higher pay for teachers. Voters approved the property tax rate hike on Tuesday, but the details of when it will take effect are still not clear.
