China is Russia's best hope to blunt sanctions, but wary
China is the only friend that might help Russia blunt the impact of economic sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, but President Xi Jinpingโs government is giving no sign it might be willing to risk its own access to U.S. and European markets by doing too much.
Georgia shrimp season to close Sunday
BRUNSWICK, Ga. โ Georgiaโs commercial and recreational food shrimp harvest season will close at 6:31 p.m. Sunday. Williams made the closure at the recommendation of marine biologists with DNRโs Coastal Resources Division and Shrimp Advisory Panel, comprised of commercial and recreational shrimpers, scientists, Georgia residents and nongovernmental organization representatives. The recommendation was made based on data collected from CRDโs Ecological Monitoring Trawl Survey conducted aboard the Research Vessel Reid W. Harris, which samples shrimp and finfish at 36 sites along the Georgia coast each month. โIf the movement of smaller shrimp continues as expected, we could pass the ideal size distribution before we resample in February. Although the law allows for shrimp season to open mid-May, the season has opened in June in all but one of the past five years due to environmental conditions.
Russia's reputation, Olympic status on trial for doping
(Alexei Nikolsky, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP, File)GENEVA โ Russiaโs status as an Olympic team, and its reputation as a serial cheater in international sports, goes on trial next week in more legal fallout from the country's state-backed doping saga. WADA would let Russian athletes compete only if not implicated in doping or cover-ups. WADA says details of doping tests and emails were deleted or changed, and false trails created to frame whistleblowers. The International Olympic Committee refused WADAโs request to ban Russia outright from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. RUSADA rejected WADAโs proposal, and Russian Olympic officials later fired the RUSADA chief executive who acknowledged the wrongdoing.
