In this photo from the County of Los Angeles streaming video, incoming Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon speaks after he was is sworn in in downtown Los Angeles Monday, Dec. 7, 2020. (County of Los Angeles via AP)LOS ANGELES – New Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, seeking to revamp the nation’s largest prosecutor’s office with progressive policies, said Monday after taking office that cash bail will be ended for many offenses and sentences in thousands of cases will be reevaluated. A former San Francisco district attorney and assistant Los Angeles police chief, Gascón has already drawn the ire of prosecutors in his own office, as well as members of the Los Angeles Police Department. His first major meeting upon winning his race was with Black Lives Matter organizers, who were critical of outgoing District Attorney Jackie Lacey. The Los Angeles Police Protective League, which is for rank-and-file police officers and heavily supported Lacey, blasted Gascón new policies after his speech.

(AP Photo/Richard Vogel,File)LOS ANGELES – After a scrappy debate that Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey believed lifted her campaign and was a “disaster” for her opponent, she got a text message from the LA mayor with unwelcome news: He was switching his endorsement to her challenger. A little more than half is for Gascon, the vast majority from a handful of well-heeled backers supporting justice reforms. Gascon has gained support from protests over the death of George Floyd at the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer. Lacey said Gascon is pandering to supporters and that when he was San Francisco DA he never prosecuted a police killing case.

The Los Angeles Times first reported Murray's arrest ahead of the news conference. A Los Angeles police officer was attacked Saturday night inside the Harbor Community police station in San Pedro.

LOS ANGELES The husband of the Los Angeles district attorney has been charged with pointing a gun at Black Lives Matter members who demonstrated outside the couples home the day before the primary election in March. The attorney general filed three misdemeanor charges Monday against David Lacey for assault with a firearm for the March 2 incident. Jackie Lacey, the first Black person and first woman to run the nation's largest local prosecutor's office, has been a constant target of Black Lives Matter protesters. She has charged one officer in a fatal on-duty killing, but has not filed charges in hundreds of other cases. Email messages sent by The Associated Press to her campaign and her husband's lawyer were not immediately returned.
