Duval County holding ever Zoom civil jury trial
DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. Duval County will be handling Floridas first fully remote civil jury trial starting on Monday. The trial, also believed to be the first fully remote trial with a binding verdict in the United States, is set to begin at 9 a.m. Court records show the parties involved have signed consent forms saying they have no objections to a remote trial. Nichols says when picking a jury, important details attorneys would look for if the process were held inside the courtroom could be lost over Zoom. "Not having your email up on your computer while you're participating in jury selection," Nichols said.
Walk-in chapel provides wedding services steps from Duval County courthouse
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Duval County Clerk of Courts has not performed wedding ceremonies since Florida's same-sex marriage ban ended in 2015. The business features a walk-in wedding chapel. Shubert has performed nearly 20 weddings since opening his "Walk-In Wedding Chapel" one month ago inside Maddy D's cafe on West Adams Street. "We give them a beautiful, beautiful Christian wedding ceremony, give them a God blessing and take photos of them," Shubert said. Courthouse wedding ceremonies no longer take place in Duval, Baker or Clay counties.
