This animation depicts the Terrain-Relative Navigation technique incorporated into entry, descent, and landing for the Mars 2020 rover. โ€œFor Mars 2020, LVS will use the position information to figure out where the rover is relative to safe spots between those hazards. Adโ€œWe have what we call the trifecta of testing,โ€ explained JPLโ€™s Swati Mohan, guidance, navigation, and control operations lead for Mars 2020. Sheโ€™ll be at Mission Control for the landing, monitoring the health of the system every step of the way. The Mars 2020 mission is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

Inauguration rehearsal evacuated after fire in homeless camp

Rehearsal resumed not long afterward, accompanied by frequent passes by a helicopter patrolling the skies over the Capitol. Law enforcement officials said there was no threat to the public and the fire was not believed to be a threat to the inauguration. The Associated Press obtained the โ€œall concernedโ€ message sent to all the National Guard troops coming to Washington. People involved in the rehearsal said security officials yelled โ€œthis is not a drill.โ€The lockdown was lifted about an hour later. __This story corrects that Andrew Johnson, not Andrew Jackson, was the last sitting president to not attend his successorโ€™s inauguration.

John Adams and John Quincy Adams also opted not to participate in a tradition that began with George Washington. The White House Historical Association points out that John Adams was never formally invited by his successor, Thomas Jefferson, to the event and perhaps didnโ€™t want to impose. He did not call on Adams, nor did Adams invite Jackson to the White House. Some four decades later, President-elect Ulysses S. Grant refused to ride with President Andrew Johnson from the White House to the Capitol for the ceremony. Rather, Ford was administered the oath of office in the White House East Room shortly after Nixon had tendered his resignation to avoid impeachment.

Crime required for impeachment? Not so, say legal experts

Read full article: Crime required for impeachment? Not so, say legal experts

But legal scholars dispute the idea that the Founding Fathers ever intended for impeachable offenses to require proof of a crime. And historians are equally dubious that the argument from Johnson's lawyer, Benjamin Robbins Curtis, can be credited with securing Johnson's narrow acquittal. It's a way of trying to promote an understanding of the Johnson impeachment that is false, based on what historians now believe." That was the very concern that led to Johnson's impeachment in the first place. I'll be blunt: If I was the president's lawyer, I'd probably make the argument too," Stewart said.

The Camera Obscura and Wold of Illusion attraction in Edinburgh is a popular stop for tourists. (CNN) - A trip to a tourist attraction in Scotland turned out to be a life-changing moment for one woman after a thermal camera detected she had breast cancer. Dr. Tracey Gillies, medical director at NHS Lothian, said her teams use digital mammography to detect breast cancer. "Thermography devices are not sensitive or specific enough to be a trusted method to detect breast cancer -- in Ms Gill's case the discovery was serendipitous." October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- an international campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the second most common cancer in women.

Impeachment: A rarely used path for upending a president

Read full article: Impeachment: A rarely used path for upending a president

The first step toward impeachment is taken by the House, which debates and votes on whether to bring charges. If the House adopts an impeachment resolution, the Senate then holds a trial, with the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court presiding. A Senate trial against Clinton commenced on Jan. 7, 1999, and unfolded over four weeks, with Chief Justice William Rehnquist presiding. On Feb. 12, the Senate voted to acquit Clinton on both charges -- falling far short of the 67 votes needed to convict. Three days later, the Senate convened a formal impeachment trial, with Supreme Court Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase presiding.
