JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a fantastic start to the final week of the high school football regular season, with one team ending a near three-year losing skid and a perfect finish for another on Thursday night.
Top-ranked Raines walloped Atlantic Coast 57-0 to wrap up a second straight perfect season. The Vikings (9-0) will have the No. 1 seed in Region 1-3A when the playoffs start in two weeks.
Bishop Kenny capped an 8-2 regular season with a 42-10 romp over Providence. The Crusaders (8-2) will likely stay at the No. 3 seed in Region 1-3A for the playoffs.
Middleburg wrapped up its first eight-win regular season since 1990 with a 43-14 romp over North Marion. The Broncos (8-2) won eight games in 2003 but picked up that eighth win in their playoff opener. The Broncos have to await their postseason fate as Beachside and Fleming Island square off on Nov. 4 in a game that has significant playoff implications for four area teams. If the Golden Eagles beat Beachside, that gives the district title to Ponte Vedra.
If Beachside wins, the Barracudas would win the district title due to its head-to-head win over Ponte Vedra.
Nease clobbered Beachside 47-17 on Thursday night. The Panthers (8-2) polished off a strong regular season, and honored members of its 2005 state championship team at halftime. The Barracudas (6-3) rested their starters after a couple series’ to prepare for the game against Fleming Island.
Trinity Christian dealt Fletcher’s faint playoff hopes a blow with a 21-7 win on Thursday. The Senators (6-4) started the day in ninth place in Region 1-6A and needed a win (and some help) to make the playoffs.
No. 10 Ed White edged Baldwin in overtime as Donny Moore recovered a Baldwin fumble to seal a 48-42 win. The Commanders finished the regular season 8-2.
Sandalwood ended a 29-game losing streak with a dominant 34-8 win over rival Parker to end the area’s longest skid in nearly a decade. Only Stanton’s 30-game from 2013-15 has been longer in recent memory.
In the Sunshine State Athletic Association playoffs, top-seeded West Nassau crushed Stanton 48-12 to move on to the second round. The Warriors improved to 10-1 and will host Umatilla or Lake Weir next week. Paxon raced past Franklin County 42-30 to move into the second round of the Atlantic league championship division bracket. The Golden Eagles (7-4) will face Bell or Fernandina Beach next week.
