JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Week 9 of the high school football season lived up to the billing, with a pair of Super 10 thrillers to headline a busy Friday night.

In a Super 10 showdown, No. 5 Oakleaf hung on to edge Ed White 45-41 in a Friday night thriller. Running back Fareed Coleman rushed for five touchdowns and Jack McKissock threw the go-ahead touchdown to Trace Burney with 14 seconds left to help Oakleaf to a major win. The Commanders (6-2) had one final shot to win but couldn’t get their Hail Mary to fall.

King Boylston had three touchdown passes to Nick Roberson and rushed for another score to lead the Commanders.

Middleburg (7-1) pulled the week’s biggest upset, shocking No. 9 Beachside 37-36 in overtime to muscle its way back into the District 3-5A race. It was the biggest win of the season for head coach Ryan Wolfe.

The win likely did more to help Ponte Vedra win the district, but the Broncos are in far better position now than they were at the start of Week 9.

One week after getting blown out by Ponte Vedra (41-14) in a big District 3-5A collision, the Broncos put themselves right back in the conversation. It’s a longshot to win the district due to the points discrepancy between the Sharks and Broncos, but winning out, and then pulling for Ponte Vedra to lose to IMG’s Junior National team and Creekside could tilt the scales in favor of the Broncos. They’d also need Beachside to lose to Orange Park or Fleming Island.

At 3-1 in district play and ranked No. 1 in Region 1-5A, Ponte Vedra got a huge boost from Middleburg’s win and is the favorite to win 3-5A now.

In St. Johns County, No. 1 St. Augustine had a sluggish win over rival Bartram Trail, pulling away for a 34-20 win. The program honored longtime coach Joey Wiles before the game. Wiles won a state championship in 2005 and retired in 2016 after a career mark of 242-83. Of those, Wiles went 198-43 with the Yellow Jackets.

Next week is perhaps the biggest of the season. Nine district championships will be decided, including games between Mandarin and Oakleaf (1-6A), Riverside and White (4-4A), Raines and Yulee (3-3A) and Providence and University Christian (3-1A).
