Jaguars training camp notebook: Tough day for the offense in joint practice with Dolphins

MIAMI – Well, that was something. One day of joint practice with the Dolphins, and it had a bit of everything. Fights. Big plays. More fights. And did I mention fights?

It was a chippy sort of practice, but Jourdan Lewis said after practice, he thinks head coach Liam Coen likes to see his team fight a little bit.

I’m sure Coen would also like to see his team execute a little bit better. Trevor Lawrence described his day as “sloppy” after practice. Tough to argue. I spent the day watching the Jaguars offense match up with the Dolphins defense, and well, the numbers speak for themselves.

Sights and sounds from Thursday’s joint practice in Miami

QB tracker

Trevor Lawrence: 8 for 14, 2 TDs (Both to Brian Thomas Jr.) 2 INTs (Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jack Jones) and sacked twice (Benito Jones and Bradley Chubb).

Nick Mullens: 3 for 5, sacked twice (Quinton Bell and Zeek Biggers)

John Wolford: 2 for 3, sacked once (Biggers).

Tua Tagovailoa: 2 for 7 (only tracked final team period).

Not exactly an electric showing. The touchdowns to BTJ, one of them could easily be written off as a sack, and the other was in the red zone. Honestly, the only reason I gave them credit for that touchdown is because of the crazy play from Thomas. He caught a short slant, turned on the jets to get to the other sideline, and burned the whole defense.

Otherwise, Lawrence’s day looks that much worse, throwing a pair of picks both of which are on the QB. Maybe the one to Jones could be on Brenton Strange since he never looked back for the ball, but that is just a maybe. Overall, not exactly a confidence-building day for the Jags offense. Lawrence said that Grant Udinski told the QBs after practice that they won’t be judged by what happens on the practice field or in preseason but by what happens in the Week 1. Sounds like a nice way for the coach to tell players they didn’t play well and to try and flush it.

The running game wasn’t much better.

RB tracker

Travis Etienne: four carries (all from Lawrence).

Tank Bigsby: four carries (three from Lawrence and 1 from Tuten

Bhayshul Tuten: four carries (one from Lawrence, two from Mullens and one from Wolford).

LeQuint Allen: one carry from Mullens.

Kevin Harris: one carry from Mullens.

The best run of the day was probably by Tuten, who had a big running lane opened up for him by Hunter Long. Overall, the backs had little to no space.

The Dolphins D-line was wrecking everything. Zach Sieler, Zeek Biggers and Benito Jones were all active at the line and in the backfield.

Notebook

  • Starters won’t play in the preseason game on Saturday, so this was the last time we will see the Jags starters until week 1.
  • No Travis Hunter. He was dressed and went through individual drills, but did not practice.
  • Brian Thomas Jr. is good. Not sure why some people were concerned about BT, but when it’s time to compete, he cracks it up.
  • Good day from Jarrian Jones. He said he feels more comfortable now and free to play like himself. Tagovailoa and the Dolphins tried his side multiple times, and Jones held his own, staying in tight coverage.
  • Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker are a two-man wrecking crew. They were able to apply a ton of pressure on Tagovailoa.
  • Cam Little was 3 for 3 on field goals.
  • Patrick Mekari got the majority of the reps at right guard. The right side of the line with Mekari and Anton Harrison had a bit of a rough day.
  • Parker Washington had a solid day. He created a ton of space in 1-on-1s and during team drills, found himself open a few times. Including one deep throw that should have been a touchdown, but Trevor just missed him.
