Jaguars training camp notebook: Penalties, dropped passes pile up on Thursday

The Jaguars held their 15th training camp practice on Thursday, Aug. 14 at the Miller Electric Center. (Christopher Smith, News4JAX)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was not a good day. The Jaguars spent most of the practice scrimmaging 1’s vs. 1’s, 2’s vs. 2’s, and so on. These sorts of practices can sometimes give a good glimpse into what the team is or can be. Right now, it’s a work in progress.

Trevor Lawrence said after practice, they were “a little sloppy offensively,” and “we have been a little too sloppy for the offense that we want to be.”

Both of those statements are accurate. I even added a column for dropped passes to the notebook today, since it was that kind of sloppy day.

The rough day wasn’t only for the offense. I talked with Jourdan Lewis after practice who said he thought the defense as a whole got off to a slow start. I’d agree with that, but they did rebound and get on the right track. There were a couple of flags for pass interference early, then the D cleaned it up the rest of the way.

Training camp content

The reserve defensive line had itself a field day. Lawrence was the only Jags QB with any time to operate. I recorded four sacks on the reserve QBs, but those are clear sacks. There were guys applying pressure and in their faces all day.

Just overall a rough day.

Notebook

  • Maason Smith was activated from the PUP list.
  • Tyson Campbell and Arik Armstead both worked off to the side with trainers during practice.
  • Travis Hunter started the day with the defense running as the third corner to come onto the field, but staying on the boundary.
  • When Hunter switched to the offensive side, Christian Braswell became the third cornerback.
  • Looks like the safety rotation has ended. Andrew Wingard has run with the first-team D for a while now. Something that did catch my eye was a three-safety look where Darnell Savage, Eric Murray and Wingard were all on the field, with Foye Oluokun and Dennis Gardeck at linebacker, with just three on the line.
  • The O-line shuffle is on. Anton Harrison went down, and with him sidelined, they shuffled the deck, sending Walker Little to right tackle with Fred Johnson going in at Left tackle. They also put Wyatt Milum in at right tackle for a few reps. And with Patrick Mekari seemingly back healthy and at practice, Chuma Edoga continues to take the first-team reps at right guard with Mekari rotating in after. The O-line may not be as set at it looked like it was.
  • A little fight between Tuten and Jarrian Jones. Nothing crazy, but Jones slapped him across the helmet before the two were separated.
  • Ethan Downs and Branson Combs both had good days. The UDFAs both flashed, putting pressure on the QB and downs popped up for a TFL as well.
  • The wide receiver competition for the  No. 6 spot looks like Trenton Irwin and Austin Trammell are going to be hard to unseat. They just consistently do good things, and both also add value on special teams.
  • Darius Lassiter had a nice day. Caught a couple of passes, including a diving catch. He was a UDFA that I thought was interesting when they signed him. This is the first real time I can think of him flashing during camp, but good to see.
