Extended Coverage: Thousands of runners take to the streets of Jacksonville for the Gate River Run

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Around 15,000 runners are hitting the pavement this morning in Downtown Jacksonville for the 48th annual Gate River Run.

The largest 15K in the country, the Gate River Run serves as the 15K national championship and features an equalizer bonus for the top runners.

The Top-25 seeded women runners got a 5-minute head start on the men, going off at 7:55 a.m., while the elite men began with Wave One runners at 8 a.m.

Wesley Kiptoo was the first to cross the finish line, so gets an extra $5,000 in prize money!

Calli Hauger-Thackery finished shortly after him.

Wave Two of runners began at 8:05 a.m., Wave Three began at 8:10 a.m., and Wave Four began at 8:15 a.m.

Every finisher of the 15K will receive a medal.

Following the race, there will be a celebration at Metropolitan Park next to the finish line. Publix will be providing free food and drinks. There will also be free beer, a live band, kids’ bounce game, and, of course -- an awards ceremony.
