When disaster strikes, the best protection is preparation. One of the simplest yet most important steps you can take is to make sure your household has enough essential supplies to last through an emergency. Having both a Go Kit and a Stay-at-Home Kit ensures you’re ready—whether you need to evacuate quickly or shelter in place.

This month’s focus: Be Ready for Any Emergency.

The Go Kit

Your Go Kit should contain at least three days of supplies that you can easily carry with you. Pack it in a sturdy backpack or duffel bag, and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is. Essential items include:

  • Food & Water: Non-perishable food and bottled water (one gallon per person per day).
  • Medicine: A supply of prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Power & Connectivity: Backup batteries, portable chargers, and extra charging cables for your cell phone, CPAP machine, wheelchair, or other essential devices.
  • Personal Items: Flashlight, first-aid kit, hygiene products, copies of important documents, and cash.

The Stay-at-Home Kit

If it’s safer to remain in place, a Stay-at-Home Kit will help you weather the storm. Store enough supplies to last at least two weeks, including:

  • Shelf-stable food and clean drinking water.
  • Extra medication and medical supplies.
  • Batteries, flashlights, and backup power options.
  • Comfort items like blankets, games, or books to help reduce stress.

Why This Matters

Emergencies often come with little warning. Power outages, flooding, or evacuation orders can disrupt access to stores and pharmacies. By preparing now, you give yourself and your family peace of mind, knowing you’re ready to handle whatever comes your way.

Tip from Security First Insurance: Preparation today means peace of mind tomorrow. Start small, build your kits, and check them regularly to ensure everything is ready when you need it most.
