Kelly Peretti-Beccaccio, a prominent figure in the Jacksonville Beach running and cycling community, shares her inspiring story of battling multiple sclerosis (MS) and breast cancer, highlighting her determination to continue running and raising funds for those affected by the diseases. Diagnosed with MS in 2017 and breast cancer in 2020, Kelly’s resilience and drive have led her to participate in significant fundraising efforts like the MS Run the U.S. Relay, where she will run 164 miles in six days to support MS research and aid those living with the condition. Despite her health challenges, Kelly remains committed to her passion for running and helping others, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and community support.
Dr. Tracy Packiam Alloway joined us to discuss Kelly’s perseverance and resilience. She sited a study published in 2024 that looked at almost 2000 people. The researchers found that resilient people use some of these strategies to cope with stress.
1)Purpose: I did what I thought or felt was right in my day-to-day life. I engaged in spiritual practices like prayer, meditation, or participating in a faith gathering
2) People -I provided support to other people going through difficulties - I reached out to others to receive support
3) Perspective: -I confronted my fears and problems head-on -I actively tried to change or challenge overly negative or critical
