JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Since it’s cold out many people are bringing out their space heaters.
Space heaters can be deadly and it’s good to know how to keep you and your family safe.
Here are some harsh realities. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters are involved in more than a thousand home fires every year.
Meanwhile, the National Fire Protection Association says that space heaters factor into about 46% of home heating-related fires.
Here are some do’s and don’ts when using space heaters:
- Keep it away from flammable items - it should be at least 3 feet away from furniture, bedding, curtains, and other flammable items.
- Don’t leave it unattended - turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
- Keep it away from water - don’t use it near a sink or in the bathroom.
- Make sure you have a working smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.
- Plug it directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord.
- Choose a heater with safety features. When buying a heater look for one that has a tip-over switch, automatic shut-off and overheat protection.
- Buy a heater from a reputable company- look for heaters that are tested by a nationally recognized testing company.
- Make sure to supervise your children and pets. Keep them away from the heater when they are nearby.
Space heaters can ignite nearby combustible materials which can lead to a fire.
If your space heater doesn’t have a timer, you should consider a plug in smart outlet. They are a safe alternative.
