The sheriff’s office used this incident to inform families about the benefits of its SafeTrak services and K-9 Scent Kits and how to register.
SafeTrak is a bracelet worn by participants with special needs, or those suffering from a traumatic brain injury, dementia, Alzheimer’s. etc. The bracelet helps identify the wearer and helps deputies find them quickly.
Criteria for the SafeTrak bracelet:
- Participant must have a full-time caregiver (spouse, parent, guardian). No caregiver means a higher risk of death or injury if they get lost.
- Registration of a device with the SafeTrak program.
- Education of caregiver and understanding of equipment is mandatory.
- The caregiver must express and understanding that this device does not replace or relieve them of their responsibilities to care of the individual. It is a tool to assist in their recovery should they become lost, it is not a babysitter.

The K-9 Scent Kit is free for people with a disability. Items belonging to the person are tools for Bloodhounds to track if reported missing.
