LAKE CITY, Fla. – Inmates at the Columbia Correctional Institution (CCI) sewed bears for children for officers to deliver to children during domestic violence calls.
Led by Sgt. McIntyre and Officer Fleming, inmates modified a sewing pattern and created 14 hand-sewn teddy bears for Lake City Police Department.

As more materials and stuffing are received, inmates look forward to continuing production, donating more bears, and expanding their outreach by creating lap blankets and matching bears for residents at a local assisted living facility.
“Partnerships like this show that positive community engagement can take many forms,” Chief of Police Gerald Butler said. “These handmade bears will help bring comfort to children in difficult circumstances, and we are grateful to Columbia Correctional Institution for their thoughtful contribution.”
Earlier this year, CCI expanded its Job Assignment Credentialing programs by adding eight new trades, including the textile program. Officials said it allows inmates to broaden their skills and contribute positively to the community.
