FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – A Fernandina Beach park could be seeing changes soon.
On Tuesday, a committee voted unanimously to endorse a plan to change and expand Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and Charles Albert Field. If approved, the park would become a three-field softball complex.

This was just the first step. The plan still needs to be approved by the city commission.
There was a presentation by Capital Projects Manager Glenn Akramoff to the commission. The community was also there to share their concerns about the project.
If the expansion occurs, the community is worried about parking, light pollution, and utilities used by the local neighborhood, like the horseshoe pits and bathrooms.
Not all city leaders are ready to move forward.
“This complex at MLK is more than just ballfields,” City Commissioner Genece Minshew said.
Vice Mayor Darron Ayscue said the plan should go back to the drawing board.
“Let’s get everybody in the same room, have a conversation about what makes that complex work for everybody.”
