‘Times are tough’: Local businesses offering discounts for those in need during government shutdown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A couple of weeks ago, News4JAX told you about Pie Heaven Bakery Cafe near Mayport Naval Station offering free chicken pot pies to any military members in need during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Well, they’re still at it, and other local businesses are pitching in to help neighbors in need, too.

Donatos Pizza

Donatos Pizza in Jacksonville Beach is offering 75% off any pizza for anyone who has a Florida EBT card.

“No strings attached. Just neighbors helping neighbors,” they said in a social media post.

The deal will remain in effect until the government shutdown no longer affects SNAP benefits.

Jerome Brown BBQ

Starting Saturday, Nov. 1, Jerome Brown BBQ on Lem Turner Road will be providing free meals every day throughout the government shutdown — except on Sundays (they’re closed on Sundays).

There will be a set number of meals available each day, and they said they will be sure to post updates when they reach capacity for the day and try to accommodate your family another day.

They ask those interested to not just show up at the restaurant but to text their name and phone number to 904-532-0286 and then they will be contacted to confirm pickup.

“Let’s stand together Jacksonville -- because no one should go hungry,” their post read.

Wicked Batter

During the shutdown, local bakery Wicked Batter on Lake Gray Boulevard in Jacksonville is offering free birthday cakes for military members.

They said the offer will stand until military members get paid again.

DoorDash

Delivery company DoorDash, which already partners with local food banks and food pantries to deliver meals nationwide, said it wants to do its part to help during the crisis.

It’s launching an Emergency Food Response, including free delivery for Project DASH food bank and food pantry partners. It will also partner with leading grocers to waive delivery and service fees for an estimated 300,000 orders for SNAP recipients.

Customers who have linked a SNAP/EBT card to their profile can shop on DoorDash at Sprouts, Dollar General, Schnucks, Food Lion, Giant Foods, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Hy-Vee, Giant Eagle, and Wegmans and have their delivery and service fees waived on one order.

Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie, beginning November 1, will donate $500 in products or gift cards to local hunger-relief groups while also offering free delivery and waiving service fees for SNAP recipients for the entire month.

Rewards members will also have access to $15 meals that are typically priced around $26.
