And on Tuesday, a local pantry said its food services are running “dangerously low” as the impending cancellation of SNAP and WIC funds creates even more uncertainty about how families who rely on the government’s services will be able to keep their fridges stocked.

Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida said about 1,500 households a month have sought the organization’s assistance, and while it says needs were expected to grow as the holiday season approaches, the government shutdown has created even more demands.

“We don’t believe any family member should have to skip meals,” said LSS chief development officer Jennifer Barrett. “For all those who share this belief and have the means to help, we are asking you to help us.”

For those who would like to support the organization’s mission, nonperishable food items can be dropped off at 4615 Philips Highway on Mondays to Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Monetary gifts are also accepted, and can be made at www.lssjax.org/donate.

The organization’s most-needed items include: canned meats, peanut butter, soup, rice, beans, cereal and pasta.

Through November 15, monetary donations will be matched by LSS supporters Hugh Smyrl and Richard Hood, who have pledged to match any gift to LSS, dollar-for-dollar (up to $10,000) with their own gift for Thanksgiving meals.
