FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A 24-year-old woman accused of intentionally crashing her car with her boyfriend inside is now facing an additional vehicular homicide charge, after he died in the hospital eight months after the crash.

Daniel Waterman, 22, was a passenger in Leigha Mumby’s car when it crashed into a tree in Flagler County on Super Bowl night in February.

Mumby, who was initially arrested in July, had previously been charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery.

Amended court records show she is now also charged with vehicular homicide. She is currently out of jail after posting bond on her original charges.

According to the amended charges, Mumby “purposefully” drove into the treeline, showing “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property.”

Waterman’s family said Mumby, who is pregnant with Waterman’s child, was upset over a message he received from another girl.

“Leigha intentionally caused the crash. They were arguing over Snapchat,” a family member said.

That claim aligns with court records and the Florida Highway Patrol’s report, which includes a statement from Daniel.

According to the arrest report, Daniel said the last thing he remembered before the crash was Mumby telling him, “I don’t care what happens, you’ll get what you deserve,” before swerving off the road and hitting a tree, leaving him incapacitated.

Waterman’s family said he fought for his life in the hospital after the crash.

“It’s just so sad. He had his whole life ahead of him,” a family member said. “I’m never going to see him be a dad. I’m never going to see him be who he was supposed to be.”

Waterman was a basketball and football player, and his family said he was the best son and cousin anyone could ask for.

Mumby told investigators she does not remember what happened. She is due in court again on Nov. 19.
