PALATKA, Fla. – A dog that attacked and injured a woman in Palatka last week was “humanely euthanized” on Friday, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, deputies said they were able to confirm that the dog that was in Putnam County Animal Care and Control’s custody was the dog that attacked the woman on Oct. 2 while she was walking in the area of Beech and Hicks.

According to the sheriff’s office, the dog was signed over by the owner last Thursday morning after believing his dog might have been involved.
The woman was hospitalized following the attack and told officials that a man working on a vehicle nearby heard her screams and hit the dog with a sledgehammer. The man used a t-shirt to make a tourniquet and drove the woman to the hospital.
Deputies arrived at the hospital and said they saw multiple puncture wounds to the victim’s right leg and severe injuries to her elbow that almost severed her arm. The woman was flown to a trauma hospital.
Deputies said on Thursday she is still recovering and is in stable condition.
“Due to the aggressive nature of the dog toward people and the owner’s relinquishment of the dog, the animal was humanely euthanized on Friday,” the sheriff’s office wrote.
Deputies said the dog had no known prior history of aggressive animal behavior toward people.
The investigation is ongoing.
“We want to thank the diligence of Animal Control staff who very quickly were able to locate the dog,” the sheriff’s office said.
