JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is in custody following the fatal shooting that took place Saturday inside a store on the city’s Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

The deadly shooting, which took place inside the Prime Stop store on Lane Avenue South, unfolded just minutes after two men entered the store, an employee who witnessed the event told News4JAX.

The employee said the first man entered the store and walked past the cash register to the food preparation area. Shortly after, a second man entered and approached the first, demanding repayment of money owed.

The two men argued before the second man pulled out a gun.

The first man then drew his own weapon and began shooting. The second man was hit and fell to the floor, where he later died.

Police said they found the victim inside the store after the shooting occurred.

Following the shooting, witnesses say the shooter fled on foot through the front door. Surveillance cameras outside the store may have captured footage of the suspect’s escape.

During a news conference on Saturday, JSO confirmed they had a person in custody who was cooperating with the investigation. No murder charges have been filed yet as the case remains under investigation.

Authorities say the case is still pending classification and could be ruled either a murder or justifiable homicide if the shooter is found to have acted in self-defense.
