Jacksonville woman in motorized wheelchair struck, killed by semi in Winter Springs

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – A 58-year-old Jacksonville woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a semitruck in Winter Springs on Tuesday afternoon, according to our sister station WKMG.

Police said the deadly crash happened at S.R. 434 and Belle Avenue at 3:30 p.m.

According to the release, when officers arrived, they found the woman dead in the roadway “from what appeared to be injuries suffered from being struck” by the semi.

According to preliminary investigation, the woman – later identified as Colene Ruhl – was traveling east in the motorized wheelchair on the sidewalk along S.R. 434, approaching Belle Avenue.

Police said the semi, which was heading east on S.R. 434, was attempting to make a right turn on Belle Avenue. As the semi began turning, the woman started to cross Belle, “and was hit by the trailer of the turning semi, thrown from the wheelchair, and killed.”

The driver stopped and remained at the scene until officers arrived, according to the release.

Police said Ruhl was in town visiting from Jacksonville.
