Community group based in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood continues fight against redlining

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A group in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood is keeping up its fight against redlining, holding monthly meetings to address the issue both locally and across the city.

The Red Alliance for Justice gathers every third Thursday of the month at the True Church of the Living God on State Street. The meetings are open to city council members and the public, offering a forum to share concerns and discuss solutions for improving neighborhood quality.

Anthony Brown, a representative of the Red Alliance for Justice, told News4JAX that he wants to see more decisive action from city leaders.

“We want to see legislation with more teeth that would restore and give the people in this community improvement in infrastructure, the ability for capital infusion, and opportunity for affordable housing,” Brown said. “If you go outside right now, you can see all of the flooding, which is a classic example of redlining and neglect for communities like these.”

The group is also calling for the city to reconsider plans for a new Medical Examiner’s Office on the Northside, suggesting the construction be repurposed to better serve the community.

Additionally, they are advocating for a neighborhood bill of rights to be codified for New Town, Sugar Hill, and other neighborhoods in Jacksonville’s northern area.

The Red Alliance for Justice continues to invite residents and officials to join the conversation and help them serve their community.
