Springfield’s storytelling walls: Murals transform neighborhood into outdoor gallery

SPRINGFIELD, Fla. – Vibrant murals pop on building facades throughout Springfield’s Phoenix Arts & Innovation District.

It’s a “regenerative development” project that aims to transform 8.3 acres into a creative hub for artists, both local and abroad.

“We are bringing art to the community versus them having to seek it out,” Emily Moody, Chief Experience Officer of the Phoenix Arts & Innovation District, said. “Right here, there’s art that looks like the people in the community.”

The district spans from Liberty Street to Main Street along 14th Street, encompassing spaces that are being reimagined as creative studios.

Army veteran turned full-time artist Victor Alexander represents the type of talent the district hopes to attract. After serving five years in the military, Alexander returned to his Jacksonville roots to pursue his artistic passion.

“I constantly get to see that there are canvases that are still blank,” Alexander says. “In a lot of places, it’s difficult to find this type of space.”

Alexander, who said he specializes in neo-expressionist work, emphasized the importance of consistency and discipline in artistic growth. His message, “Be More,” appears throughout his work, encouraging others to push beyond their perceived limitations.

“There is more than we can teach ourselves,” he said. “More that we can gain from through art or whatever your expression is as long as you commit to the values and the things that you say -- they will come.”

The district’s walls serve as an outdoor gallery, featuring everything from street art to professional murals. Elena Ohlander, who participated in the district’s inaugural mural jam project, sees the accessibility of public art as crucial to community engagement.

“Galleries and museums aren’t always accessible for people,” Ohlander says. “When you’re on the street, you can bridge that gap of access to art.”

The development team envisions more than just an art scene. Plans include creative office spaces, art venues and retail establishments. Moody said that artists often serve as pioneers in community development.

“They understand the grit,” she said. “This is not a cookie-cutter neighborhood.”
