Unexploded ordnance causes temporary evacuation at NAS Jacksonville

Objects found during concrete slab repair on flight line

NAS JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Personnel from certain parts of Naval Air Station Jacksonville had to be evacuated for about 2 hours on Thursday after crews found unexploded ordnance while repairing concrete slabs.

The NAS Jacksonville Public Affairs Office sent a notice about the unexploded ordnance just before 10:45 a.m. Thursday, saying construction teams working on the flight line had found the objects.

The area was cleared of all personnel, and several buildings near the site were evacuated as a precaution.

There was never an explosion.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team came over from Naval Station Mayport, checked out the objects and deemed them safe.

They were removed, and all personnel who had been evacuated were allowed to return to their buildings before 12:30 p.m.

The airfield also reopened.
