Some residents said they went over 24 hours without power and they had to sleep with no heater.
Deborah McAlonan was wearing a beanie, jacket, pants, and boots in her own home just to stay warm.
“All day long, I’m dressed like this,” the Hilliard resident said.
She had been without power since early Wednesday morning and she said it’s not the first time she lost power within the last few months.
McAlonan has a generator, but it’s not powerful enough to heat her whole house.
According to Florida’s power outage tracker, around 400 people in Nassau County were without power.
On Wednesday, News4JAX spoke with Okefenoke REMC’s Director of Communications Michele Hutchins who said crews were working around the clock to restore power to all customers.
However, Hutchins said it was possible crews wouldn’t be able to restore power to all customers by Wednesday.
“The other issue with this situation is as much as the ice weighs limbs down, when things start to warm up they can snap back up. So you can get it at the onset and on the back end. So it’s just something to be mindful of,” Hutchins said.
Beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, a Freeze Warning will go into effect for all our Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia counties through 10 a.m. Friday. A Cold Weather Advisory is also in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Friday. The potential for a hard freeze is high as overnight temperatures drop into the 20s.
We also reached out FPL asking when will their outages in the same area be restored, they said it’s best for people to visit FPL’s Power Tracker Tool to stay updated on the changes.
