World-renowned Jacksonville chef who gave away 500 turkeys dies at 72

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Chef Alvin Harvey who has served hundreds of people meals for Thanksgiving has passed away. He was 72 years old.

The funeral service for Chef Alvin Harvey will be held Wednesday, March 27 at Julington Baptist Church on Snyder Street, just north of Bartram Springs.

Last November, Harvey was preparing to give away 500 free Thanksgiving turkeys and all the fixings in the Brentwood neighborhood. He was renowned for his giving, and his generosity went beyond the River City.

In 2005, he and a group took a food truck to Lousiana to feed the needy in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:

“If I reach down to pull you up I want to feel your pain because we are all just one paycheck away from being homeless,” Harvey said.

Harvey is survived by his wife Nancy, two daughters and two sons.
