JACKSONVILLE, Fla – A man and woman in their 20s are dead after being shot Monday night in a parking lot in the Southpoint area, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
JSO said that when officers arrived at Bowden Road near the I-95 off-ramp around 9:15 p.m., they found two people shot inside a car next to an ATM.
The man died at the scene, and the woman was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to police.
The man was identified by the Jacksonville chapter of MAD DADS as 21-year-old Jamarion Deandra Darion Barnes, who leaves behind a child. News4JAX was told Barnes’ mother released the information through MAD DADS but said she is in too much pain to speak. According to MAD DADS, Barnes’ mother is also grieving the loss of another son.
“It’s devastating. She lost two sons: one in March and now Jamarion in June,” said A.J. Jordan with MAD DADS. “When does it stop? It stops when the community starts speaking up.”
The woman who was killed was identified by her sister as Tyniya Powell.
“We were really close,” said Powell’s sister, Taleyah Gooden. “She came to me when she needed me, I came to her when I needed her. She was always there for me.”
Gooden says she’ll be holding on to fond memories of her loved one.
“I’m going to think about all of the times me, my mom and her shared,” Gooden said. “It’s been me, my mom and her for so long. So to just lose our princess — it’s just terrible.”
As the investigation into Monday’s double shooting continues, many are mourning the deaths of Barnes and the woman.
“That’s sad. I feel sorry for them and their families,” said Ann Newsome, who was one of the dozens of people News4JAX saw at the ATM on Tuesday.
Newsome said she was shocked to learn about a shooting in the area, which has multiple stores, a lot of traffic and surveillance cameras.
“Chilling, very much so,” Newsome said. “I’m really surprised.”
