CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. – A former Camden County deputy and jail supervisor involved in the beating of an inmate inside the county jail nearly three years ago was sentenced to spend 16 months behind bars.

Ryan Biegel, 27, who worked for the Camden County Sheriff’s Office for three years before his arrest, was one of three employees caught on camera beating Jarrett Hobbs in September 2022.

On January 28, Beigel pleaded guilty to one count of using unreasonable force.

The CCSO said Biegel “acted outside the values, policies, and professional standards of the Sheriff’s Office. His actions do not reflect the integrity or mission of this agency.”

The first video showed Hobbs appearing to pick up something on the bench of a jail cell. Deputies entered and appeared to try and restrain him before striking him repeatedly on his head.

In a second video, the struggle continued into a hallway, where the man is forced to the ground and appears to be restrained.

Biegel admitted he punched the inmate five times in the back of the head, which he knew was unreasonable, and then struck him another 22 times with his fists and knees.

“The safety of our staff, inmates, and the public is our top priority,” Sheriff Kevin Chaney said. “Accountability applies to everyone—including law enforcement. We remain committed to transparency and upholding the public’s trust.”

Once he’s released from federal prison, Biegel will serve three years of supervised release.

Correctional officers Mason Garrick and Braxton Massey were indicted on charges of battery and breach of oath in connection with the beating of Hobbs.
