JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s tax season, and April 15 is closer than you think.
If you are looking to hire someone to help you file your taxes, there are a lot of options out there. But before you pay anything, the Better Business Bureau is reminding you to do your research first.
First, look at their credentials. This may seem self-explanatory but without the proper credentials, your preparer can’t represent you in the event of an audit.
Next, be careful of spectacular promises. If a tax preparer promises you larger refunds than the competition, that should be a red flag.
One of the best ways to find a trustworthy tax preparer is to ask family and friends.
Some other things to ask:
- How available are they to help? Can you get in contact with them easily if you have questions?
- Are they available year-round if you get audited?
- You also want to ask about fees, what’s included.
- And read contracts carefully.
Finally, if things don’t add up, walk away and find someone else. This is your money and your sensitive information. Don’t let untrustworthy people have access.
