“Bill was a friend to many in our agency and community. He put his faith and family first,” JSO said in a statement about the officer’s passing.
Cater joined the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in 2003 and fulfilled his dream of working in traffic when joined the JSO Motor Unit in 2017, merging his passion for traffic safety with motorcycles.
Cater was named Motorman of the Year in 2023.
“More importantly, Bill was a loving family man. He served in high school ministry at his church, volunteered at church camp, and shared his voice as both a soloist and choir member,” JSO said. “He loved the outdoors, especially surfing, skating, and riding motorcycles.”
Cater was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 but continued to serve as an active-duty officer “with courage and dedication.”
“He made an incredible impact here and will be deeply missed. We are supporting his family and working with them on memorial service plans,” JSO said.
