Tracking the Tropics: Here’s the latest on Hurricane Gabrielle and the 2 other disturbances in the Atlantic

. (.)

Hurricane Gabrielle has intensified rapidly, now reaching Category 4 strength with sustained winds near 140 mph (220 km/h).

The storm is positioned about 180–195 miles southeast of Bermuda, and it’s moving north‑northeast at roughly 10‑12 mph.

I expect it to stay mostly over open ocean, passing to the east of Bermuda, while gradually weakening as it moves into cooler waters.

Meanwhile, large swells and rip currents are already spreading out, affecting Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast (especially from North Carolina northward), and Atlantic Canada.

Two other systems to watch

  1. Tropical wave between Cabo Verde and the Lesser Antilles: This system has shown increasing shower and thunderstorm activity, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) gives it a 30% to 80% of developing into a tropical depression or storm later in the week.
  2. Disturbance near the Leeward Islands / East of the Caribbean: A second wave closer to the Caribbean (about 400 miles east of the Leeward Islands) has a moderate chance (10‑50%) of development later in the week. It could bring increased showers and possibly more organized tropical weather as it moves near or north of the Bahamas.
