Tropical Storm Gabrielle increases in speed, expected to become a hurricane Sunday

With maximum sustained winds at 65 mph, Tropical Storm Gabrielle continues along its northwest path at 12 mph, less than 400 miles southeast of Bermuda.

This slow-moving storm system is expected to continue along this path until Sunday night, when a turn to the north is forecast on Monday.

The center of Gabrielle is expected to pass east of Bermuda on Monday.

There are no coastal warnings or watches in effect. Interests in Bermuda should monitor the anticipated path of Tropical Storm Gabrielle.

Swells are beginning to reach Bermuda and will build throughout the weekend. Swells could reach as far west as North Carolina, and up the coast northward towards Canada.

Conditions are becoming more favorable for slow development over the next week as it moves west-northwestward to northwestward across the central Atlantic. As of 8 a.m. Sunday, the broad tropical wave was located well to the west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

This area is where there is a 40% chance of tropical formation over the next 7 days.
