Rounds of locally heavy rain possible this weekend

Weather Authority weekend forecast

. (.)

Most of the storms have moved offshore, providing a nice light show. A few storms are exiting coastal southeast Georgia near St. Simons Island. Areas of light rain will be possible overnight.

Locally, we received rainfall amounts from a Trace to over 3 inches. This pattern continues through the weekend with local flooding possible under slow-moving, heavy rain-producing storms.

Invest AL 90, the low-pressure system north of the Leeward Islands, continues to show signs of organization about 250 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Environmental conditions may allow for further development, making a tropical storm very likely to form this weekend.

Invest AL99 remains disorganized, with showers and thunderstorms situated midway between Africa and the Windward Islands. There is a chance that a short-lived tropical depression could form in the next day or so, though the system is expected to move into less favorable conditions on Saturday. If the low remains intact, the wave may enter a slightly more favorable environment late this weekend into early next week as it approaches the Windward Islands.

Tonight: Showers and storms are possible through late tonight.

Weekend: Partly cloudy early, then becoming cloudy as the Gulf Coast breeze pushes inland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely as moisture levels increase under a southwesterly flow. A stalled, weak frontal boundary will act as a focal point for locally heavy rainfall, mainly north of I-10. Conditions will be mild and muggy early, with lows in the 70s to low 80s. The chance of showers and storms ranges from 70 to 90 percent. Afternoon highs will be in the 90s inland and upper 80s along the beaches. Winds will be from the southwest at 5-10 mph.

Next Week: Drier conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as the onshore flow returns.
