Scattered showers with thunderstorms are on the move across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia, moving in from the west, riding the Gulf breeze. Showers with thunderstorms will continue through late Thursday night.
Hurricane Erin remains a Category 2 hurricane. Erin is now heading northeast at 18 mph with 100 mph winds. Wave and rip current risks will continue along our beaches through Friday.
The low north of the Leeward Islands is now Invest AL90. The area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave is located a few hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands. Environmental conditions appear conducive for continued development and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend while it moves near or to the north of the northern Leeward Islands.
Invest AL99 could be a short-lived storm. Showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands have changed little in organization. Environmental conditions appear favorable for additional development and a short-lived tropical depression could form. Beyond Saturday, environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for further development.
The newest area of potential development is deep in the Central Atlantic. A small area of low pressure located about 1200 miles southwest of the Azores is producing a few showers and thunderstorms. Upper-level winds are only marginally conducive for development while the system moves slowly eastward over the next couple of days.
Tonight: Showers and storms will be possible through late tonight.
Friday: Partly cloudy skies early then becoming cloudy as the Gulf breeze pushes east. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely as moisture levels build under the southwesterly flow. A mild and muggy morning, with lows in the 70s to low 80s. The chance of showers and storms will be 60-90 percent. Afternoon highs will be in the 90s inland, upper 80s along the beaches. Wind: Southwest, then becoming south at 5-10 mph.
Weekend: The Gulf breeze continues with increasing rain chances through the day.
