LIVE RADAR: Afternoon storms popping up across our area with heat advisory in effect

Heat Advisory in effect Friday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Most of the area will stay dry through lunchtime, but pop-up thunderstorms are expected mainly between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

These storms are likely to be brief but could bring heavy downpours, especially in areas west of I-95 and into southern Georgia.

Areas along the coast, from Jax Beach southward, are forecast to remain mostly dry.

A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with “feels like” temperatures reaching anywhere from 108 to 110 degrees in some inland neighborhoods.

Official highs are expected to climb into the mid-90s across the region, with a slightly earlier sea breeze helping bring temperatures down at the beaches by the early afternoon.

.

Looking at the weekend, Saturday is likely to bring more scattered inland storms but also sunny, beach-friendly periods along the coast.

By Sunday, a fresher northeasterly wind is forecast to reduce both temperatures and rain chances—especially near the coastline, where most will stay dry.

If you’re planning to head out on the water or to the beach, conditions are forecast to be good through the weekend, with local wave heights around 1 to 2 feet and calm surf.

Starting early next week, Erin’s influence is expected to build, with larger swells and higher surf midweek as the hurricane moves 700 miles east of JAX Beach on Wednesday.

Erin becomes hurricane

Erin continued to intensify Friday in the Atlantic and reached hurricane strength at the 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center.

Erin is showing strong banding and organization on satellite images with 75 mph winds, which points to a strengthening storm system.

According to the latest forecast models viewed on Exact Track 4D, Erin will likely pass about 700 miles east of Jacksonville on Wednesday.

The strongest winds—up to 115 mph, potentially Category 3 strength—are forecast to stay well offshore, with the storm’s center positioned north of Puerto Rico and away from Florida and Georgia.

There will be no wind or rain impacts to Jacksonville or the United States.

One important takeaway for those enjoying local beaches: while Erin moves past, waves build Tuesday and beaches will feel the effects of increased surf and more hazardous conditions in the water Wednesday and Thursday.
