Afternoon storms and tropical activity to watch this week

Rounds of rain as we keep an eye on the tropics

.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Get ready for a wet stretch ahead. High rain chances are expected every afternoon this week, with probabilities hovering around 70 to 80 percent. Most of these storms are forecast as classic seabreeze-driven thunderstorms, typically developing early in the afternoon and lasting into the evening.

The Weather Authority’s Exact Track 4D forecast maps show neighborhoods from Jacksonville across North Florida can expect rainiest periods after lunchtime, so it might be wise to tackle errands early before showers start to move in. The forecast suggests this wet pattern is here to stay throughout the work week, resulting in soggy conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

There’s also a trough off the coastline being monitored for possible minor development by the weekend. The NHC suggest there’s only a 30 percent chance of this system organizing, but it may increase rain chances even more as the week wraps up.

Monitoring Tropical Storm Dexter and other disturbances in the Atlantic

Over the Atlantic, The Weather Authority is closely watching Tropical Storm Dexter accelerate away from Bermuda well north of the island. Dexter has 45 mph winds but is not expected to impact any land or become a hurricane.

Meanwhile, meteorologists are tracking other areas of interest, including a potential tropical wave expected to emerge off Africa later in the week. However, any impact from this is far in the future – as far out as August 12 – and models currently see no imminent threats to Florida or the local area.

Relief from extreme heat as temperatures hold in the low 90s

It may feel muggy, but at least the intense heat wave is in the rearview mirror. Forecasts highs stay in the low 90s, for the next several days. Thanks to the daily clouds and frequent storms, the Jacksonville area is expected to avoid the upper 90s from last week’s heat wave.
