Extreme heat persists: Jacksonville area under another advisory as temps soar into upper 90s

News4JAX Weather Authority warns: Stay alert for storms, protect pets, and expect a sweltering day

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville and neighboring areas are feeling the heat once again as a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m.

Morning temperatures started hot—Jacksonville reported 79 degrees, Orange Park hit 81 degrees, and Mayport saw the same by sunrise.

Conditions are forecast to intensify quickly, with afternoon highs expected to reach the mid to upper 90s. In some locations, temperatures will feel like they’re in the 100s, making outdoor activities especially challenging.

Everybody’s going to be brutally hot, so be sure to pace yourself and plan accordingly if you need to be outside.

Rain and storm chances

There is a 20% chance for scattered showers or thunderstorms to pop up this afternoon, especially in the Jacksonville area, according to News4JAX’s Exact Track 4D forecast.

While rain activity won’t hit everyone, areas that do receive storms could experience heavy downpours and lightning.

Recent days have brought significant showers and strong lightning, so it remains important to monitor weather alerts.

If thunder or lightning moves in, the best advice is to take a break from the outdoors and head inside until the storms pass.

Timing and exact locations for showers remain uncertain, so continued monitoring is recommended.

Staying healthy and safe

The relentless heat can sap energy and disrupt daily routines, including sleep patterns. Many have noticed that high humidity and lingering wetness after storms make it feel even more uncomfortable.

If you’re planning to get your dog out for some exercise, earlier is better. The Weather Authority’s dog walk forecast shows temperatures rising fast—from 84 degrees at 9 a.m. to 94 degrees and mostly clear by noon, with highs potentially reaching 97 degrees later in the day.

Remember, pets are just as vulnerable to extreme temperatures, so limit outdoor time and provide plenty of water and shade.
