Afternoon showers and pop-up storm chances

While the main story is the heat, there is the possibility of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Folks in southern zones and areas west of I-95 and closer to US 301 may see the heaviest downpours, but rain is not expected to be as widespread. Most rain will begin after 1 p.m., before pushing inland with the east coast sea breeze throughout the late afternoon.

Heat safety tips and health precautions

Be sure to stay hydrated, reduce your outdoor activity, seek the A.C. or even the water, and wear your lightweight, light-colored clothing. If you notice you’re feeling tired and have stopped sweating, it’s a sign you should move indoors and cool off. The heat is expected to be most intense on Saturday and Sunday. Heat advisories are likely to be issued by the National Weather Service. Those advisories are issued when feels like temperatures are expected to be 108-112 degrees for two hours or more.

If you’re enjoying the sun by the water or at the pool, don’t forget your sunscreen and keep drinking water regularly. Staying alert to your body’s signals is key to preventing heat-related illness.
