Prepare for another triple-digit heat index day and more afternoon storms

High heat, storm chances, and tracking the tropics

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Summer is showing its strength this week, with a stretch of hot days ahead for Jacksonville and the surrounding areas.

Temperatures kicked off the morning in the mid-70s, but the warmth isn’t expected to stop there. By this afternoon, highs are expected to climb quickly into the 80s and even 90s, with the heat index making it feel like triple digits yet again.

The Exact Track 4D forecast shows today’s high reaching 91 degrees, followed by 92 degrees tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Jacksonville can expect more of the same, with afternoon temperatures from Wednesday through Monday consistently landing in the low to mid-90s.

No major breaks from the heat are on the horizon, so it’s a good time to check in on friends and neighbors and find some shade when you can.

Afternoon thunderstorm chances ramping up

With heat comes humidity and, often, storms. Rain chances today sit at about 30% around Palm Coast and between 5% to 10% elsewhere across the area.

While the morning started off dry, conditions are expected to change this afternoon as the heat builds.

The severe storm risk was lowered earlier this morning, but that doesn’t mean the region is out of the woods.

The Weather Authority predicts general storms between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m., with the greatest chance for stronger or severe thunderstorms lining up in the late afternoon and early evening, roughly 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The biggest threats with any storms that form will be gusty winds, lightning, and locally heavy rain.

This pattern of storms popping up in the afternoons is expected to stick around for much of the week and into the weekend, so planning outdoor activities earlier in the day might be your best bet.

Tracking the tropical outlook in the Gulf

We’re keeping a close eye on the Gulf, where a low-pressure area is being monitored for possible tropical development.

The Weather Authority’s graphics highlighted a 40% chance that this system could develop into a tropical depression over the next seven days or even the next 48 hours. That’s a noticeable uptick from yesterday.

Most rainfall and storm activity related to this low are expected to stay south of Jacksonville and away from the Georgia state line for now.

Still, The Weather Authority will be watching closely as the system continues its journey toward the Gulf through midweek.
