Jacksonville braces for triple-digit heat index and storms

Scorching temperatures and rain expected to impact Jacksonville and nearby beaches throughout the week

Intense heat and humidity take center stage

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Weather Authority is keeping a close eye on Jacksonville’s forecast as extreme heat and humidity move in for the week. According to News4JAX meteorologist Katie Garner, early Tuesday started with a beautiful sunrise and a temperature of 75 degrees, but that’s as cool as things are expected to get for the rest of the day.

Temperatures climbed quickly across the area, with Mayport already nearing 80 degrees in the morning hours. High heat combined with rising humidity is forecast to push the “feels like” index into the triple digits today. While the actual temperature is likely to remain in the 90s, the humidity will make it feel even hotter.

The Weather Authority expects these challenging conditions to stick around for a while, as highs in the 90s are forecast for at least the next seven days. “Seven of the next seven days, the nineties are with us,” said Garner. On several days this week, it may even feel like temperatures are in the low hundreds.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain on the way

In addition to stifling heat, periods of rain and storms are becoming increasingly likely for Jacksonville and coastal communities. Garner explained that a flow of Gulf moisture and the development of a sea breeze will bring off-and-on showers, with today staying mostly dry before conditions worsen tomorrow.

Rainfall totals over the next five days are forecast to reach about 1 inch in Jacksonville and up to 1.5 inches in Orange Park. Coastal areas including Saint Augustine, Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach can also expect higher rainfall amounts as totals have been adjusted upward for those communities.

As is typical for early summer, storms will likely develop during the afternoon and evening hours, especially Wednesday. Garner noted that weather patterns will be closely monitored, and viewers are encouraged to stay updated with Exact Track 4D radar as these showers and isolated thunderstorms move in.

Prolonged stretch of 90s: What to expect next

Jacksonville’s week ahead looks locked into a pattern of hot, humid weather with daily storm chances. According to futurecast graphics and the News4JAX meteorologist, every day this week will feature highs in the 90s, while afternoon thunderstorms will become most likely as humidity peaks.

While today may be one of the “coolest” in the period, the heat index is forecast to stay elevated. The region’s pattern of scattered, sometimes heavy thunderstorms is expected to continue, especially into the afternoon and evening each day.
