JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Saturday will be partly cloudy with breezier conditions at our beaches. Temperatures will stay below 90 for the majority of the region with a 30% chance of rain, mostly along the beaches this afternoon.
Rip current risk heightened by offshore tropical depression
If you’re heading out to Jacksonville’s beaches or the Golden Isles in Southeast Georgia this weekend, pay close attention to the water conditions. Tropical Storm Chantal has developed and is moving toward to Carolina coast.
This system is moving north and west, generally in the direction of Charleston. While not forecast to be a powerful storm, even a modest tropical system offshore can raise rip current risks significantly. Southeast Georgia’s beaches are facing a high rip current risk, while Northeast Florida beaches have been upgraded to high risk. Local experts stress that even strong swimmers can get caught in rip currents, so the best advice is to swim near a lifeguard, bring a buddy, or stay in shallow water if you’re not confident in the surf. If you ever find yourself pulled by a rip current, float on your back and try to stay calm until you can get help. You’ll find more safety tips on rip currents in the News4JAX weather section.
Breezy winds will be in the teens with gusts around 20 mph as the tropical system moves north and west towards the Carolinas.
Our evening forecast will be mild with temperatures dropping into the mid-70s.
Sunday’s rain chances increase as we return to the sea breeze convergence pattern along with warming temperatures back in the 90s.
