JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Things are heating up fast in Jacksonville. Temperatures started the day at 72 degrees at the airport and quickly rose into the 80s near the coast, with Mayport hitting 82 degrees early.
The Weather Authority and Exact Track 4D models indicate highs around 95 degrees in Jacksonville today, and it’s likely to feel like the low 100s once humidity is factored in.
It’s not just Jacksonville feeling the summer sizzle. Expect highs in the mid to upper 90s throughout the region, with places like Waycross looking at 98 degrees.
Even at the beach, while official highs stay in the 80s, the humidity will make it feel just as hot.
Temperatures are expected to hit 90 degrees by 11 a.m., and the heat won’t let up much at night either, with tonight’s low forecast around 72 degrees.
Be sure to take proper precautions if you’ll be outside during the peak afternoon hours.
Rain and storm timing
The region’s dry streak isn’t here to stay.
A high-pressure system over the area will keep rain away today, with only about a 5% chance of seeing any showers before tonight.
That changes tomorrow as the high shifts away and summer showers are expected to return in full force, mainly inland.
Over the next five days, up to a quarter inch of rain is forecast along the coastline and across Jacksonville and Orange Park, with amounts of about half an inch further inland, including Green Cove Springs and Lake City.
The weekend brings more active weather, with rain chances climbing to 60% both Saturday and Sunday, and highs sticking in the mid-90s.
Thunderstorm patterns typical for this time of year are setting up, so keep an umbrella handy if you’re not heading to the coast.
If the sand and surf are calling, today looks like a good bet — the Weather Authority expects coastal locations to stay mostly clear of showers, thanks to the setup of the high-pressure system.
That means beachgoers can enjoy sunny, humid conditions, though it will still feel uncomfortably hot at times.
Tracking the tropics
A low-pressure system east of Bermuda has about a 40% chance of developing into a tropical system according to the Exact Track 4D tropical outlook.
At this time, it is not expected to directly impact local weather, but the Weather Authority will keep an eye on it as the week progresses.
