JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville officially welcomed summer this week, and it’s kicking off with a serious heat wave.
Highs in the low to mid-90s are expected to continue every day through next Thursday. That means hot, sticky days with sultry nights where lows may only fall into the low to mid-70s.
Friday marks the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year. You can expect the sun to rise around 6:25 a.m. and set at about 8:32 p.m., giving plenty of time to get outside—just remember to do it safely.
Thunderstorms and rain potential
If you’re planning outdoor activities, keep an eye on the skies.
The News4JAX Weather Authority team is forecasting pop-up showers and thunderstorms each day, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
The National Weather Service considers southeast Georgia to be at a heightened risk, with a 30% to 40% chance of rain—most likely between 5 and 10 p.m.
Not everyone will see rain, but those who do could face quick but intense storms.
The risk of severe weather is expected to be most pronounced north of Jacksonville, especially in Georgia.
Beachgoers are more likely to dodge these showers, as coastal areas show lower rain totals, though a stray storm could still swing through.
Some of these showers are starting to pop just south of Flagler Beach.
Making the most of summer
With the summer sun this strong, it’s all about smart planning.
Lather up with the sunscreen, drink a lot of water and watch out for rip currents if heading to the coast.
The Weather Authority’s Exact Track 4D system is also tracking a moderate rip current risk for local beaches.
Dog owners are urged to take walks earlier in the day, not only to beat the heat but also to stay ahead of pop-up showers—especially in southeast Georgia. Afternoon temperatures can climb quickly, and the wet pavement can get too hot for paws.
What’s next
Both the News4JAX Exact Track 4D radar and the 7-day forecast point toward more of the same: steamy 90s, a few scattered storms, and classic summer vibes across the area. Stay tuned to The Weather Authority for the latest updates.
