Hot days & afternoon storms ahead, but no Atlantic hurricanes on the horizon

Expect continued heat and spotty rain, but no tropical threats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you’ve been keeping an eye on hurricane season, here’s some relief: The Atlantic is calm and is expected to stay that way for at least the next seven days.

While there’s nothing brewing in the Atlantic right now, the Pacific is really firing off.

Hurricane Erick, which was upgraded to an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 early Thursday, is expected to strike Southern Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Typical summer pattern

While the tropics in the Atlantic are quiet, locally, Jacksonville is right in the groove of a classic summer weather rut.

Expect days to start with temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s—74 degrees at JAX Airport and 80 degrees in Mayport were reported Thursday morning.

Winds are calm, with only a light breeze expected.

Things heat up quickly, so it’s best to handle outdoor plans like walking the dog, running errands, or getting in a round of tennis early in the morning.

By the afternoon, “feels like” temperatures are expected to push well into the 90s, and the current hot streak isn’t going anywhere soon.

As for storms, afternoon activity is likely to develop thanks to the combination of sea breeze, heat, and humidity.

These storms are expected to be non-severe, with the main risks being some locally heavy rain and gusty winds within stronger cells.

Rainfall expectations

Don’t expect a washout: Over the next five days, rainfall totals are forecast to stay light along the coast—around a quarter of an inch for places like Mayport and Brunswick.

Inland areas like Lake City could see a bit more, with totals up to about 1.25 inches expected.

Showers will likely hold off until later in the afternoon, so you should have most of the morning and early afternoon to enjoy drier conditions.

You won’t see any activity until this afternoon. If you want to get out there early before things get too hot, that’s your window.
