JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s another classic summer week in Jacksonville, with the heat and humidity in full force — and those familiar afternoon showers making a return.
A combination of Gulf and Atlantic sea breezes is the main factor driving this daily cycle of sunshine giving way to scattered rain.
Mornings are forecast to start on the dry side, with temperatures sitting around 73 degrees at Jacksonville International Airport and rising to 80 degrees in St. Augustine.
By lunchtime, lighter showers may develop around Jacksonville, Orange Park, Green Cove Springs, and St. Augustine, but the most significant rainfall is expected to target areas between Macclenny and Jacksonville later in the afternoon.
These showers are predicted to remain sporadic, meaning not everyone will see rain.
When storms do roll through, they’re most likely to arrive between about 4:15 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The sea breeze is expected to keep the coast a little drier, but an isolated shower or two can’t be ruled out.
While these rain totals aren’t expected to be impressive, the risk for a heavy downpour does increase inland.
Beach and outdoor safety tips
With the heat and a moderate rip current risk at area beaches, everyone heading for the sand needs to stay aware.
While a washout at the coast is unlikely, swimmers are advised to use caution.
Planning to walk the dog? Try to get out early if possible. Pavement can become much hotter than the air, so taking dogs out in the cooler morning hours can protect their paws from the heat. This bit of advice goes double on days when the temperature is climbing before noon.
High temps and rain chances ahead
Highs are expected to climb to around 93 degrees today, with afternoon and evening showers possible, continuing a pattern that’s likely to stick around through the week.
Tonight, temperatures should only drop to about 74 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.
Looking ahead, tomorrow is expected to bring more of the same, with highs near 94 degrees.
Daytime temperatures will be in the low to mid-90s— and rain chances, mostly in the afternoons, are forecast to persist right into the coming weekend.
Saturday and Sunday are both expected to reach 92 degrees, each with a 40% chance of a pop-up shower or thunderstorm.
