Pop-up showers, thunder, afternoon storms rumble through midweek

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Heads up if you’re out and about this afternoon around Jacksonville—pop-up showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to move through starting around 3 p.m.

The Weather Authority’s Exact Track 4D radar shows the rain could begin in spots like St. Marys, Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs and Palatka.

Not everyone is expected to see rain at the same time, and some locations might stay dry while others get a quick, heavy downpour.

This morning started calm and comfortable, with temperatures in the low to upper 70s and clear conditions reported for most commutes.

Despite the chance for a rumble of thunder and even some lightning, no areas are currently under a severe weather threat.

Area-by-area forecast

Rainfall is expected to vary across the region, so check the forecast for your particular area.

Jacksonville is in line for about an inch of rain, while places like Brunswick and Mayport might only see a quarter of an inch. St. Augustine and Palatka are forecast to get less than a tenth of an inch, while Gainesville, Waycross, and Valdosta could see a little more than the surrounding regions.

Rain chances won’t end today. Pop-up showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue into Thursday and well into the weekend, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead, especially for any outdoor activities.

No severe storm threat

According to the Storm Prediction Center, today’s risk is only for general thunderstorms with nothing rated as severe in the Jacksonville area.

But it’s best to keep an eye on any changes as more information comes in.
